Organic produce for Monday, May 2nd

Good afternoon everyone! The weather is cooperating with my produce so far. In other words, it’s still pretty cool outside.

No 2nds today. However, we did get full credit for the awful kale last week and the onions which were only worthy of being 2nds, but I unknowingly paid full price. So, the kale (which looks beautiful) today is extra to make up for last week. Next week, we will also have something extra to make up for the onions.

We have purple cabbage in your box. I was reminded from Jill Katz’s Wellness Open House last week that cabbage is a great anticancer vegetable. So one leaf of cabbage a day is a great preventative measure. You can easily blend it into smoothies. On the other hand, if you want to use all of your cabbage up at once, here is a great recipe for you to make tonight or special for Shabbat:

Warm Purple Cabbage Salad
1 whole purple cabbage shredded
1/4-1/3 c. oil
1 t. nutmeg
3 T. vinegar
3 T. brown sugar
1 C. raisins
2 apples diced
salt and pepper to taste

Add all the ingredients to a pot and cook on hight for 10 minutes. Stir the pot occasionally to prevent burning.

Transfer to the oven at 400F for 1.5 hours. Serve warm.

For boxes that I label each week with a family name, I made a permanent sign on a stick. If your box has a stick and label when you pick it up, place the stick/label underneath the bench (to the left of the door) so I can reuse it.

I would love empty strawberries containers back as I use them for the mushrooms that I distribute.

Strawberries will be a staple in the boxes for the rest of this month. As the price of strawberries drop, would people appreciate if they got 2lbs of strawberries one week instead of 1lb?
